It's one of the little details you probably haven't thought about, but getting a flu shot could save your wedding day and possibly even a life.

Take a moment to think about what happens at weddings. The bride and groom are going to hug, kiss or shake hands with roughly 50 to 150 people. Typically, they are going to do this while being stressed-out, tired and drinking—all things that compromise your immune system.

Not only will your immune system be compromised but you might have guests who have compromised immune systems to begin with. The elderly and children in particular are susceptible to flu. People like my Mom, who had a double lung transplant and has to take drugs to suppress her immune system in order to keep her transplant organs from being rejected, could actually die if they contract the flu.

With all the focus on Ebola in recent months, many have forgotten between 35,000 and 55,000 Americans will die this year from the common flu and more than 3 million people worldwide. When you consider your chances of getting the flu are 60 percent less with the vaccine, it is worth the minimal time and effort needed to get your shot.

From a wedding standpoint, your motivation could be as simple as not wanting to get sick on your wedding day or your honeymoon! Consider it insurance for your big day in the form of a shot.

For the squeamish, you also have the option of taking FluMist instead of a shot, which is just a nasal spray (an especially good choice for kiddos). You can click here to decide if that's a good option for you.

Best of all, the flu shot is amazingly easy and affordable to get. Most pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS don't require any kind of appointment. Prices range between free (though your insurance) to around $39 for the FluMist. Flu shots are 100 percent covered by Medicare Part D.

With the Ebola scare on everybody's mind and knowing Ebola has the same symptoms as the common flu, getting your shot could provide you with extra piece of mind—especially if you plan on honeymooning outside of the country.

If you'd like your guests to get flu shots as well, you might consider sharing this blog post on social media as a subtle way of throwing it out there. Make sure to get your shot at least two weeks prior to your wedding so it will be effective. Stay healthy! You have wedding planning to do!
