My day 4 offering for the Black & White Photo Challenge is this detail shot I took while working on a photo story of a homeless man named Mike Burgess about 15 years ago. There is water on Mike's left hand because he asked if he could wash his hands before I made this image of him holding his "favorite book."

While shooting an image of his hands being even dirtier might have made for a better photo, I felt it was important to not treat him differently than any other photo subject I was covering that might have made a similar request. The fact that you can still see how dirty and weathered his hands look even after they've been washed made the photo even more storytelling in my opinion.

I thought this image not only fit the bill for the Black & White Photo Challenge, but was a nice reminder that this is the season for giving and being thankful for all we have.

For Day 4 of the Black & White Photo Challenge, I nominate my friend Lindsay Miller, who I worked with at the Napa Valley Register and who was nice enough to recently refer a new client to me! Thank you Lindsay!
